LeClaire Police Officer Hurt In Interstate Crash

Updated:

A LeClaire police officer was taken to the hospital Sunday morning after being involved in a car crash on Instate 80.

According to the police chief, around 11:15 a.m., the officer was called to check out two people who were seen walking along the interstate, about half a mile west of the Mississippi River. The man was on one side of the westbound lanes and the woman was on the other side. They told the officer they were looking for a lost item. The officer said it was too dangerous and ordered them to return to their motorcycle.

In the meantime, a Scott County Sheriff's deputy pulled over and parked about 30 yards behind the LeClaire squad car. Both vehicles had their emergency lights activated. That's when the driver of a 2002 Monte Carlo struck the LeClaire patrol car on the driver's side.

The Le Claire officer was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries and released. The driver of the Monte Carlo, Caleb Walter of Conlona, IL, was cited for failure to have a vehicle under control.
