You may think our near perfect weather makes this the perfect time to take care of a few things around your house. But police say others are thinking only about how they can take advantage.  An East Moline man has already fallen victim to a home repair scam. "They're going door to door," says Lt. Darren Gault. "Knocking on people's doors that they would like to perform work on, or possibly that they believe would be good victims."

Lt. Gault says the scammers are with the Above the Rest Tree Service. They approach homeowners about small repairs, like painting, caulking windows or cutting trees. It's work he says is in the 100 to 200 dollar category. But he tells us that's not what's reflected in the final bill. "On completion of their work, they're asking for thousands of dollars in compensation."

Gault says there are two suspects. Both are thin white men, one in his 50s, the other in his 30s, possibly a father and son. They are driving a white bucket truck that may have Department of Transportation numbers on its side and a Minnesota license plate.

But while the men appear to be from out of town, police say they may still be in the area. And officers want to find them. "We want to provide justice for the victim as well as protect further victims from happening," say Gault. He asks anyone with any information to call East Moline or Crime Stoppers.

And he has recommendations you can use to protect yourself from scammers. He says anytime someone knocks at your door and you didn't call them, that should raise a red flag, especially if they are from a company with no local connections. Police say you should research the company, on its website and with the Better Business Bureau. Get references from friends or other homeowners in the area. And get a copy of the company's insurance as well. You don't want to sign any kind of contract until you have that information. And, you don't want to make a final payment until you are satisfied with the work that's been done.
