Davenport city leaders say work is continuing on the sewer repair program, even though it's costing the city millions of dollars.

The mayor and public works director gave an update on the program Friday morning. They say a sinkhole on the corner of Iowa Street and 5th Avenue is an example of what's going on through out the city. Problems are stemming from the aging sewer system. In most places around Davenport, the sewer system is around 100 years old.

Over the past 2-years, the city has spent $1.9-million repairing sink holes. City leaders say another $900,000 will go towards the sewer lining program, which will cut down on sanitary sewer problems.

"At any one point in time we have somewhere between 40 and 60 open potholes that are being looked at for repair across the city," says Davenport Public Works Director Mike Clarke, "This is the point in time where we're seeing those systems collapse, because they've been in existence for so long they're just worn out."

The city also announced they are adding another construction crew to help repair sinkholes. 2 construction companies will be available for repairs.
