We're a week away from Labor Day, the unofficial end of summer. After a deadly season out on area rivers the Burlington community wants to make sure boaters end the year safely. Sunday the community held a concert for a cause. The River Rats Concert brought out hundreds of people for good times, healing, and a serious message.

Organizers wanted to honor the four young lives lost in the Mississippi near Burlington in May, but also remind people of dangers on the river. Through donations the community wants to build a lighthouse for the channel, and put up boat safety check lists at area marinas and boat ramps. Many think constant reminders and messages of safety could help save lives in the future.

"Little things like make sure you have lights, make sure you have life jackets, make sure you're not over your capacity, make sure you haven't had too much to drink," said Louise Butherus, she lost her son Mathew House in the accident earlier this summer.

"We don't want to just forget, we want this to stay alive so people can stay in touch with what needs to be happening when we're on the boat and in the river," said Carlos Capdevila, organizer of the event.

Organizers also distributed 200 donation boxes throughout Burlington and say they'll continue to hold events like these -- to help fund the safety signs, lighthouse, and a memorial bench on the river.
