There is a special bond between Don Grundstrom and Dean Maupin. Sort of a father-son relationship. Both men are avid about aviation, especially when it involves flying open cockpit planes.

Don owns several biplanes, one a World War Two Stearman. There were over ten thousand of those planes built to train pilots during the Second World War.  The plane travels between ninety five and one hundred miles per hour. Maupin says it does not fly very high, and you really get a wonderful view of the countryside.

Don took Dean under his wing about fifteen years ago. Both men quickly found out that they have a love for the open cockpit planes. Don is almost ninety years old. Dean is in his fifties. They've become great friends. and travel to airshows all over the country.

One of Don's planes recently won an award at an airshow in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. It was built in 1942, and Grundstrom says the build, the finish, and the originality make it look brand new.

Maupin thinks the lure of old airplanes is the open cockpit, flying with the wind in your face. A reminder of the barnstorming era when pilots flew open cockpit aircraft around the country.
