They feel at home on the range. Tucked away in a serene setting near Long Grove, the Davenport Valley Archers practice with bow and arrow.
Part of the challenge is trying to hit a target, which in some instances, is eighty yards away. Tom Stelk practices almost every day. He says consistency is very important. Elbow up, arm extended, hand around the release. Drawing the arrow back to the same location time after time.
Bruce Leslie has been involved in the sport for more than sixty years, calling it a challenge that you never completely conquer. Bruce says archery also keeps him in good shape.
The range also has 3-D shooting. The archers aim at animal-like targets, made out of a rubber material.
The Davenport Valley Archers place a premium on safety first. They have a kids league, and talk about the importance of good sportsmanship. Tom Stelk says respect for your competitor is important.
The DVA has been an organized archery club for years and is affiliated with the Iowa State Archery Association. The club also has an indoor range at Devil's Glen Park in Bettendorf.
