No Budget For Air Conditioning At Jordan Catholic

Updated:

Students tend to lose focus when they're stuck in a sweltering classroom.

And for many schools installing an air conditioning system is just not part of the game plan.

Jordan Catholic fifth grader Megan Tanghe says, "You sweat a lot and when you come in like for lunch, one day it was dripping, and so I came in and it was all over my shirt."

She says learning gets tougher when its warm in her classroom. And others notice a change too.

"A lot of dragging, they constantly want water they want shade, but at the same time they're just miserable," says PE Teacher Jill Kenyon.

The hottest point in the older part of this building is the kindergarten room. Pulling in a 90 degree temperature. And it's not much cooler elsewhere.

Our gauge reads 80 degrees in the fifth grade classroom.

"I think it's not fair because seventh and eighth grade kids get air conditioning and we don't," says Tanghe.

The new seventh and eight grade wing is air conditioned, you can tell on the heat gun it's a lot more comfortable at 73 degrees. But it's the older part of the building that's still stuck with a boiler system."

"We do have to prioritize and our biggest priority was to get all of our students on one unified campus," says Advancement Director Janine Parr.

She says replacing the entire boiler system would cost around 100-thousand dollars. Another option, replace all the windows, and add window a.c. units.

"Either way we go, replacement of the current heating system or the windows is an unbudgeted expense," says Parr.

The school budget lacks that kind of money. And unless the school decides to change its schedule the students will have to rely on other ways to stay cool.

Parr says "They're wearing their short sleeve shirts and their shorts today so they're as cool as they can be."

"We have the fans on high so it's a lot cooler," says Tanghe.

The school says there has been some discussion about moving to a year round schedule.

But that's unlikely to happen soon.
