An Illinois lawmaker is recovering from surgery after an encounter with a cow on his 400-acre farm in Cordova, Ill. State Representative Rich Morthland was hurt after a cow smashed its head into his leg.

Morthland had to drag himself about 100 yards to his car to get help. He'll need to immobilize his leg for six weeks and follow that with physical therapy, but he's expected to make a full recovery.

Morthland and his wife run a 400-acre farm with a herd of 100 cows.
