It's called Operation Read.  United Way volunteers spending some quality time with children at the Aldridge Early Learning Center in East Moline.

Some volunteers are students from Capri College. Others are educators from Black Hawk College. Adults, stepping out of their comfort zone and reaching out to children.

The volunteers impressed upon the children how important it is to learn letters, put sentences together, and learn how to recognize words.  Each child received a book. The volunteers read to the children, and the kids and adults also did arts and crafts.

It's an opportunity to connect and bond while developing a sense of community pride. Black Hawk College President Doctor Thomas Baynum says this gives him and other college administrators the chance to be in the community, to be part of the community.

Doctor Baynum says he likes the slogan "Living and Giving." Operation Read took place earlier in the week during United Way's Day of Caring.
