The future looks bright for the Rock Island-Milan School District. That's according to the superintendent who gave his State of the Schools address Tuesday.

Dr. Mike Oberhaus announced that enrollment is up by 214 students this school year. It's the fourth year of enrollment growth. He also said attendance is strong, but the district, like many in Illinois, continues to face an uncertain funding situation.

"Both the state of Illinois and the federal government are spending more money than they are bringing in, and we need to make some future reductions. And if those reductions come along, it will be harmful to the school district," Oberhaus said.

One of the areas they want to see growth is in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics initiative known as STEM. Administrators are turning to community members and lawmakers to help find funding for STEM programs.
