Some cities have been slow to recover from the recession, but one is getting ready to start hiring again. The city of Davenport kicks off its firefighter recruitment period Thursday.
It's obviously a very stressful and dangerous job. The job description on theCity of Davenport website says, "Rescue victims from burning buildings and accident sites." According to the job posting, the position offers a salary between $47,000-$67,000 per year, plus benefits.
To apply, you need to go online to fill out an application. After that, there is a written and physical exam. That would be followed by an interview and a background check. The entire process takes about four months.
At this point, there's no word on how many firefighters could be hired. Officials say they want to make sure they have a pool of qualified candidates.
"The reason for it is we want to make sure the recruits we bring on the fire department are the very best people we can get. Obviously, we work in some very sensitive places and we have to know that those people are trustworthy," said Assistant Chief Bart Howard.
The first firefighter recruitment meeting is Thursday, Sept. 6. at the First Presbyterian Church in Davenport at 6 p.m. Applications will be accepted through September 14th.
