While some public universities have been reporting a drop in enrollment this fall, Augustana College in Rock Island is reporting a new record high. The private liberal-arts college says it has 2,551 students enrolled this fall. That's the highest enrollment in the history of the 152-year-old college.

Last week, Southern Illinois University reported a declining enrollment for the 8th straight year with 18,847 students, down 970 from a year ago. Administrators attribute the decline to smaller junior and senior classes, along with cuts to financial aid and a smaller pool of potential students.

Western Illinois University also saw a decline at its Macomb campus with 10,003 students, down from 10,423 in the fall of 2011. Enrollment was up slightly at its campuses in Moline with a headcount of 1,377 compared to 1,372 last year.
