An online auction has helped liquidate some of the assets of the former Dixon, Illinois comptroller, accused of embezzling money from the city.
80 horses, once owned by Rita Crundwell, sold for $1.64 million in an online auction conducted for the U.S. Marshals Service last week. One halter horse got the top bid of $226,000.
Crundwell is accused of misappropriating more than $53 million from the city and spending much of it on her nationally renowned horse breeding operation. She's pleaded not guilty, but has agreed to allow the government to sell many of her assets. The money raised could eventually be handed over to the City of Dixon.
Another 300 quarter horses are set to be sold in a live auctionon Sept. 23 and 24, beginning at 11 a.m. each day at Crundwell's ranch, located at 1556 Red Brick Rd. in Dixon.
The marshals service is also trying to sell her luxury motor home.
