Moving to a new area can be a difficult transition.
And for people with jobs that bring them to the Quad Cities only temporarily, a traditional house or apartment may not be the best option.
A landmark hotel began offering long term rentals after its customers asked for them.
It's expanding business by meeting a housing need.
An Army officer's assignments can take a family across the globe. And in Cindy Hyde's case her husband's latest job brought them to the Arsenal.
"We knew we were coming for the minimum of a year, and it now looks like it will be 18 months," says Cindy Hyde.
This is her first time traveling with her husband on one of his military assignments. The Army provides a list of housing choices. And lets them do the rest.
"In looking at that, one of the options we saw, it looked so unique we had to check this place out," says Hyde.
The Lodge Hotel began catering to clients like Hyde three years ago. After customers asked General Manager Ray Stoddard for the option to stay longer.
"We had a number of people with the military that knew they were only going to be in town a year or three years and they didn't want to buy a house," says Stoddard.
It's bringing new business to the landmark hotel. And Stoddard says it fills a need in the Quad Cities.
"It saves them a lot of money, and it's very convenient," says Stoddard.
As tenants finish their work they can leave without having to break a lease. And Hyde says the hotel staff can also become unofficial tour guides.
"Through them, we've come to know the Quad City area, tonight we're going to the big game, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley, because we know people on the football team and in the band," says Hyde.
A home away from home without the hassles of a typical apartment.
The military provides housing assistance to soldiers who cannot live in government provided housing.
The vouchers are based on a soldier's pay grade and family size.
