UPDATE: The rezoning request for a proposed anhydrous ammonia distribution site in Scott County has been withdrawn and won't happen at Tuesday night's meeting. The Company did not offer any reason for its decision.
Original Story: There's another fertilizer facility proposal in Scott County that's creating controversy. A public hearing to rezone five acres of land will be held Tuesday night.
Crop Production Services wants to bring a 30 thousand gallon anhydrous ammonia tank to rural Scott County. Their plan is to sell their fertilizer from the location.
Neighbors in Park View and Scott County say they want to stop the rezoning from happening. Residents nearby are worried about the harmful chemicals being so close to their homes. They have fears of a chemical explosion and runoff leaking into their groundwater. Neighbors say they hope they can prevent the rezoning and keep the ammonia out of the neighborhood.
Nearby resident, KJ Rebarcak says, "I think 'threatened' is a very good word for it.", "We're just people, quiet people, that work hard, that scrimped and saved to try and make a living out here, to have our lives, just be quiet."
Another neighbor, Nancy Phelps says "I've always lived in the country. That's why you move here, so you don't have stuff like ammonia across the road from you. So you don't have to worry about toxic waste and toxic spills."
The area being considered for rezoning is near 290th Street, right off Scott Park Road.
The public hearing begins at 7:30 Tuesday night at the Scott County Administration Building.
