Desire and determination. That's a winning combination for athletes involved in adaptive rowing.

John Sparks and Juli Barble have spinal cord injuries. Both are partially paralyzed. However, that has not stopped them from leaving their wheelchair behind, and getting out on the water.

They participate in Y Quad Cities Rowing. Twice a week, they meet at the Sylvan Boathouse in Moline.  Volunteer Coaches Hillary Milo and Tanya Braet work with the athletes on technique and concentration.

The adaptive rowing program started earlier this year, and this week, both John and Juli rowed solo for just the second time. They say it is a tremendous sense of accomplishment. Both athletes say rowing gives them something to look forward to.

The adaptive rowers turn an obstacle into an opportunity. Juli reminds other physically challenged people to not let disabilities stop you.

John says when you get out on slough, soak in the sun, and have fun rowing, it is a great day.
