The Davenport Fire Department was called to the HyVee on West Locust Street Wednesday afternoon. Officials say the fire started in a semi trailer full of recycled containers.

Wednesday's windy conditions caused thick smoke to blow through out the building. Neil Gainet with the Davenport Fire Department told KWQC the fire was itself wasn't much of an issue.

"Once we got here, the first couple of crews, Engine 5 and 3 were able to extinguish the fire within the trailer fairly quickly but there was really nothing we could do to prevent the smoke from moving throughout the store."

A HyVee spokesman says the store was forced to close and remained closed for the remainder of the evening.

In a press release sent out from HyVee Thursday morning, Ruth Comer says the store was given the go-ahead from the health department at 6:00 a.m. and will reopen at noon on Thursday.

She says store employees "worked with health department officials to clean and sanitize the entire store and identify product to be discarded. All fresh produce and other fresh products throughout the store have been replaced."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. In the press release, HyVee "thanks the fire department, the health department and everyone in the community who helped the store reopen so quickly, and thanks to our customers for their understanding and support."
