The mayor of Dixon, Illinois says a significant development will be announced Thursday afternoon regarding the case of the city's former comptroller. Rita Crundwell is accused of stealing 53 million dollars from Dixon taxpayers over two decades.
The announcement will be made at a news conference scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Dixon City Hall. Dixon Mayor Jim Burke tells TV-6 the announcement will deal with an investigation by the Lee County State's Attorney Office. He says the investigation started in July.
The federal government is already in the process of liquidating Crundwell's possessions in order to pay back taxpayers. Marshals are selling Crundwell's homes in both Dixon, Illinois and Florida along with vehicles and other personal items. There's also a live auction scheduled in Dixon this weekend for several of her horses.
According to the U.S. Marshals Service, Crundwell agreed to allow her horses and other property to be auctioned off while this case is pending. If Crundwell is found not guilty, she'll get the money the government makes from the auctions.
