The musical Maple Leafs. The Geneseo High School Marching Band will be among almost two dozen high school bands performing at the 22nd Annual Maple Leaf Classic. The classic is a tradition. It starts at 3pm on Saturday at the high school football field.

Geneseo's band is 90 members strong under the direction of Steve Scherer. Scherer believes the tenacity, endurance, and self discipline necessary to participate in band is very high.

There will be judges from all over the Midwest, looking for precision, footwork, pageantry and balance that goes along with marching. Of course, they'll also pay special attention to the sound of the music.

Scherer says band teaches students about concentration, work ethic, time management and rising to the challenge. He points out that most band students do quite well academically.

The host school, Geneseo High, will perform but not take part in the actual competition. Their performance will take place at the end of the competition.
