Iowa Study: New Teachers Underpaid

Updated:

Iowa teachers should get a raise. That's one of the findings included in a state school improvement plan.

A state task force is suggesting higher salaries for starting teachers to compete with other states. First-year teachers would see the minimum salary go up from $28,000 to $35,000, over the next three years.

The proposal also would require teachers to begin their careers with a one year residency program that would include intensive supervision and mentoring.

Governor Branstad formed the task force last spring, which included lawmakers, teachers and school administrators.
