The candidates for Illinois 17th Congressional District met in a debate Thursday night October 11, 2012. Democratic challenger, Cheri Bustos, and Republican incumbent, Bobby Schilling, are on the ballot in next month's election.

Thursday night they battled it out on several issues, including transportation. The candidates also discussed possible pay cuts to federal workers to reduce the national debt.

Cheri Bustos told the audience, "The pensions that the public servants have paid in to, they're deserving of that when they retire. We want to build up the middle class. I don't want to balance a budget on the back of the middle class and working men and women."

Rep. Bobby Schilling said, "Here's the thing, what we have is a couple of pensions that are out there. We've got to define benefits and define contribution. Here in congress we even have this. Which I am trying to get rid of, the defined benefit program."

The Schilling-Bustos race is being watched by analysts across the country because the winner could help decide which party will control the next congress.

The debate was sponsored by WQAD and The Dispatch & The Rock Island Argus newspapers.
