BNSF Railway is inviting the public to help celebrate the completion of its new railroad bridge over the Mississippi River at Burlington, Iowa. A ceremony and reception will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2012, at 11:00 a.m., at the Port of Burlington.

U.S. Senator Tom Harkin and U.S. Representative Dave Loebsack will join BNSF CEO Matt Rose and Mayor Jim Davidson at a dedication ceremony. The event will be kicked-off by the Burlington High School band and followed by a reception with hotdogs and cake.

According to BNSF, the bridge was replaced in two parts during four years of construction. The first project replaced the swing span with a new vertical lift span that more than doubled the width of the navigation channel. The second project replaced the approach spans.

The original single-track railroad bridge was built in 1868 and then upgraded in 1893. About 40 trains a day cross the Mississippi River on the bridge, including two Amtrak trains. The bridge opens about 300 times a month for river traffic.
