Updated:

An attempted traffic stop near Mediapolis, Iowa, turned into a high speed chase early Thursday morning, October 18. A Des Moines County Sheriff's Deputy recognized the driver of a suspicious vehicle around 1:25 a.m., behind the 61 Chop House restaurant. According to the deputy, he had dealt with the suspect, John Thomas Curry III, on many occasions.

The deputy then followed Curry north on 61 and after observing him make a traffic violation, he attempted to make a traffic stop. According to the report, the suspect then took off at speeds of 80 to 85 miles per hour into Louisa County.

The vehicle traveled north on Hwy 61 past Hwy 78 in Louisa County. Around 1:35 a.m., the deputy says the suspect drove his vehicle off the road and into a plowed field. He says the suspect turned off his lights and was unable to follow due to the muddy conditions.

The deputy followed the tracks on foot and eventually found the vehicle stuck in the mud. With the help of Louisa County Sheriff's Deputies, Curry was spotted around 4:22 a.m. running out of the woods and getting into the back seat of another vehicle.

Louisa County deputies stopped the car and Curry was apprehended. He was found with methamphetamine and changed with Possession of a Controlled Substance. He was also charged with Eluding. That charge was enhanced to a Class D felony due to Curry exceeding the speed limit by 25 MPH.
