Sandra Sharer is like a detective. She is constantly pouring through information. For several years, Sandra has made copies of original photos of the thousands of men from Mercer County who fought in the Civil War. She is a volunteer at the Essley- Noble Museum in Aledo.
The original photos are about 150 years old. They had been stored in boxes at the museum. The photos came from the Grand Army of the Republic. Sandra has done hours and hours of research, and discovered that more than twenty six hundred men from Mercer County served in the Civil War.
She does research, looking for the obituaries and other family information about these men. She gathers that information and catalogues it in binders. That information is available to the public.
The museum has a section dedicated to the Civil War, with a uniform, hat, canteen, and painting on display.
The original desk used by Abraham Lincoln when he was a circuit lawyer in Illinois is also prominently displayed.
Sandra says as far as research, there is always more territory to cover. She jokes, saying she will probably be 150 years old before getting it done.
