The roar of boat motors could be heard before dawn Thursday as dozens of competitors fired up their engines and headed out in search of the biggest walleye in the Mississippi River. 42 of the best anglers from the United States and Canada left the Marquette Street launch ramp as part of the National Guard F-L-W competition.

Over the next four days, they can fish the river within 100 miles of the Quad Cities and possibly fetch the grand prize of $100,000.

"I've driven through here a lot and I've always driven over the I-80 Bridge and wondered, 'how many walleyes are down there?' 'How can I catch them?' I'm fortunate enough to be able to be here and to try," said participant, Craig Teel.

The goal is to bring in the five biggest walleye you can catch each day. The final winner will be announced Sunday afternoon at the Davenport RiverCenter.

This is the 8th year of hosting the tournament, which is paying big dividends for the Quad Cities. The event is estimated to generate over $2 million in local revenue.
