Bettendorf Paddler Designs Canoes

Bill Collett says paddling rivers can be addictive. The Bettendorf outdoorsman designs and builds canoes. Bill made his first canoe about twenty eight years ago.

Taking long distance trips is a thrill. He has traveled to the Arctic Tundra three times where he saw caribou by the thousands. He also remembers a close encounter with a bear when setting up camp on the Arctic Circle.

He specializes in making solo design canoes. The solo is faster than a tandem canoe which is designed to handle quite a bit of weight. The straighter the design, the faster the canoe cuts through the water. A fiberglass coating gives the wood strength.

He has gone on canoe trips to southern Canada, and also loves to paddle waterways in Missouri. Collett especially enjoys the wildlife, and says he can go on trips for weeks, if not months.

Collett says his father first introduced him to canoeing with a trip to the Boundary Waters. Bill has been hooked ever since.
