The Davenport School District wants ideas from the public on what to do with the Lincoln Academy building and today is the last day to submit a proposal.

A few organizations have already expressed interest in the space. Representatives for Community Action of Eastern Iowa say they could use it for their head start program, United Way is looking for space for its Promise Neighborhood Team and the YMCA would like to offer childcare, tutoring and mentoring in the building like it did when the school was open.

Dr. Arthur Tate, Superintendent of the Davenport Community School District says the district's goal at this point is not to let the building sit empty for long and make sure it serves the best needs of the immediate neighborhood.

"We want something with some longevity, it's just not going to come and go and it's something that really fits in the neighborhood itself."

Once all the proposals are turned in, a subcommittee will conduct interviews and narrow down the finalists. There will also be a public forum and a vote by the end of the year.
