With the holidays looming and many people still without a job, the United States Postal Service is offering some temporary relief. The Postal Service announced on Thursday morning, November 8, 2012, that they will be hiring in the Quad City area and throughout Iowa, and especially hope to hire unemployed veterans.

USPS spokesperson, Richard Watkins says approximately 10 employees will be hired in the Quad City area. These temporary appointments are for the period of November 17 through December 31 and come with an hourly wage of $11.50 with varying shifts and days off.

In addition to the Quad City area, there are approximately 150 positions in the Des Moines area and 15 in the Cedar Rapids and Waterloo area.

Watkins says these new workers might be able to keep their jobs longer. Beginning in January, there is the potential for approximately 50 of these positions to be retained for up to six months.

In addition to these temporary positions, the USPS also says there are other openings.

USPS has approximately 60 temporary city letter carrier openings throughout the Hawkeye District, which includes most of Iowa and the Quad-City communities in Illinois. The appointments are for 360 days with the possibility of additional appointments. The hourly wage is $22.15 and will earn one hour of vacation pay for every 20 hours worked. A valid drivers' license and a good driving record are required.

The Postal Service has 20 Tractor-Trailer Operators (TTO) positions available in the Des Moines area. Tractor-trailer applicants must have a valid CDL Class A license and two years of general driving experience with at least one year full-time or equivalent of driving 7-ton trucks or buses of 16 passengers or more. A minimum of six months of the required total driving experience must be in a tractor-trailer. The hourly wage is $21.00.

There are three Auto Mechanic Technician positions in the Des Moines area with salaries starting at $38,000. There are numerous openings for Postal Support Employees (PSE), who will earn from $12.38 to $14.60 per hour performing various duties such as mail distribution, customer service and custodial positions. For a TTO, PSE or auto mechanic technician position, there is a requirement of a written examination through the Postal Service. These positions include limited benefits.

According to the USPS, these job opportunities earn competitive wages with an additional premium for hours worked between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. with varying hours of work per week.

Applications are being accepted from Preference Eligible Veterans and Non-Preference Eligible throughout the Hawkeye District. First consideration will be given to all Preference Eligible Veterans.
