China has a new leader and he has ties to the Quad City Area. Xi Jinping has been promoted to party general secretary. He also was appointed head of the commission that oversees the military.

People in the QCA may remember Xi's return visit to Muscatine, Iowa in February 2012. He first came to Muscatine in 1985 to learn about hog farming, agriculture and the people of this community.

Locals say he was enthusiastic upon his return and kind. Xi said he was impressed.

"You were the first group of Americans that I came into contact with. My impression of the country came from you. For me, you are America."

Xi is the son of a prominent revolutionary who's worked his way up through the communist party. In the public eye, he has been overshadowed by his wife, a popular singer.

His selection as communist party boss comes at the end of week-long congress, though the Chinese electorate consists of a small clique at the top of the party, and Xi was chosen years ago.
