The consolidated school district known as Mercer County, is looking for more funding through a local sales tax. The Mercer County School Board has agreed to put a one-percent sales tax on the April ballot.

The referendum will ask voters to raise the tax on retail sales, except for food or medicine. If approved, the tax would generate about $300,000 a year for the district. Voters rejected a similar proposal in 2011, but the superintendent says this time around, they plan on doing a better job of educating the public on the need.

The district is expecting a revenue shortfall from the state of Illinois and as a result, will have to make cuts.

The Aledo and Westmer school districts merged in 2009.
