A Davenport police detective shot a dog Monday night after it attacked him during a compliance check on a sex offender. It happened in the 2100 block of Harrison Street in Davenport just before 5 p.m.

According to police, detectives were serving warrants at the residence when a Doberman Pincher was released from the home and started attacking one of the detectives. They say the detective tried to stop the attack by kicking at the dog and when that didn't work, he fired a shot.

The bullet just grazed the dog and we're told the injury is minor. The detective is fine.

Officers ended up arresting 54-year-old Thomas Arthur Brunton for failing to register as a sex offender. Brunton was in jail for about four hours being released on bond.
