Bill Bunn, professor of English at Mount Royal University and author, braved Calgary's first major snowstorm Friday night to read from Duck Boy, his first YA novel. Appropriately enough, he chose to treat the audience to the scene where the hero is lost and struggling through the snow, trying out his new-found alchemical skills in the hopes that they will save him or keep him warm.
But young Steve Best quickly learns that alchemy isn't magic, and that the only escape from the storm comes from his own wits and two feet. When he is able to use his family secret to travel between dimensions, he doesn't find unicorns or sorcerers or castles--just a wasteland between dimensions, where everything is fragmented and unreal, a World of Pieces. He learns to overcome his insecurities and fight back against bullies both real and supernatural.
Part fantasy, part dystopia, and all adventure, Duck Boy has received praise from adult and teen critics alike. "A fun story aimed at middle-graders... [F]ull of eccentric characters, exciting chases and a strange alternate world," says one Amazon reviewer. A teen on Goodreads adds, "People who like fantasy, but not the kind most people like these days with vampires and werewolves, would like this. I thought it was very fun to read and now I'm interested in alchemy. "
The author has scheduled launches in a variety of locations--bookstores, libraries, and Mt. Royal University, all so far in the Calgary area. For those who are not local, Duck Boy can be found on all major retailer sites in both electronic and print formats: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, Overdrive, and more.
Publisher Bitingduck Press is especially targeting e-book sales, and aims to make acquisition and use of e-books as easy and fun as possible. Duck Boy may be purchased at the publisher site as a single DRM-free package containing pdf, epub, and mobi versions of the book. The publisher is also distributing e-books through retailers using a patent-pending custom QR code system called Web Bytez, where custom postcards send buyers to the e-book but the brick and mortar store gets a percentage.
Bitingduck Press is aimed at nerds and geeks of all ages, publishing fiction and nonfiction about science, scientists, and misfit teens. They are currently accepting submissions in all genres.
