A roster of fourteen players. The group is totally volunteer. Most of the members are not music majors. They simply enjoy ringing bells. The Ascension Ringers Handbell Choir at Augustana College began in 2001.

Larry Peterson is the Director of Music for Campus Ministries at Augustana. The group typically rehearses once a week and performs at Sunday morning worship services and other campus events.

The sound of the bells is charming. Larger bells create a lower pitch while smaller bells create a higher pitch. Timing, precision, and choreography are also important aspects of any performance.

Handbell ringing developed in England over 300 years ago. Some of the handbells weigh as much as bowling balls. Today there are thousands of groups in churches, schools, and communities throughout the country.

Larry Peterson would like to form a community handbell choir in the Quad Cities for anybody high school age and older. Community auditions will be held on January 20th at the Ascension Chapel on the Augustana Campus from noon until 4pm.
