The Illinois Department of Corrections has hired 135 new correctional officers, including some in the Quad Cities. DOC spokesperson, Stacey Solano, says the new officers will replace some of the 206 employees who left the job during the current fiscal year. 12 of those officers are filling positions at the East Moline Correctional Center as of Nov. 19. Solano says that will raise the prison guard staff at EMCC to 247.

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn wants to close two prisons, Tamms and Dwight and other correctional facilities. Back in September, local leaders raised concerns about overcrowding and security if the prison closures pushed more inmates to East Moline.

The union representing state prison guards has been fighting the issue in court. Earlier this month, a state appeals court denied a request to dissolve a temporary restraining order that prevented Quinn from closing the prisons.
