Unemployment fell in 37 states last month, including Iowa. The October unemployment rate was 5.1 percent in Iowa, down from 5.2 percent in September and 5.8 percent at year ago. State officials say there was job strength in most sectors and October had the largest non-farm employment gain since February. There are 83,800 people still out of work in the state.

In Illinois, the unemployment rate held at 8.8 percent in October. A year ago, the October unemployment rate was 10 percent.

The national unemployment rate ticked up to 7.9 percent in October. But it has declined a full point in the past year. Employers added 171,000 jobs nationwide and hiring was stronger in August and September than first estimated.
