It is the place that some folks say is conveniently located in the middle of nowhere. The restaurant where everybody knows your name. The Argo General Store sits near the intersection of Territorial Road and 240th Avenue in Scott County.
Ken Bowker owns the business. It has been in his family since the 1800's. A place where the coffee is always on and customers might even fill your cup. One customer says you name it, we talk about it. The mandate on one of the signs reads "Order what you want. Eat what you git."
The building has been home to a feed store and grocery. At one time, a stage coach route went through the community. Actress Brooke Shields and actor Robert Urich visited the general store.
Nothing on the menu cost more than $6.50. The Argo Haystack and ham and scalloped potatoes are among the favorites.
More often than not, the number of customers is larger than the population in town. Ken Bowker says his family never got rich running the place, but they kept it open for folks to have fun. Not bad for a place conveniently located in the middle of nowhere!
