Rock Island Fire Department responded to a fire in a duplex in the 1200 block of 11th Street on Monday morning around 10:00 a.m.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Yerkey,  the resident of the lower level was sleeping when he was alerted by the sound of smoke detectors. Yerkey says he called 9-1-1 and then proceeded to check on his neighors.

"He noticed fire coming from the upstairs window. He has access to the apartment with a key, but the door was chained so he kicked it in. He attempted to extinguish the fire, but was unsuccessful due to the smoke and heat."

Firefighters were able to get the fire extinguished. The fire remains under investigation.
