Police in Storm Lake, Iowa have arrested a homeowner after making a surprising discovery while investigating a reported burglary. On the morning of Saturday, Dec. 1, a passerby noticed a screen cut and a window partially open on the lower level of the home. Officers arrived and found an unlocked rear door and entered the vacant house. That's when they discovered a large amount of animal feces and the skeletal remains of 15 cats.
Police believe the homeowner, 42-year-old Dawn Williams, abandoned the property approximately six months ago and left the cats locked up in the home. According to a news release, police say "it appears the cats ran out of food and started to feed on each other, prior to expiring." There were no live animals inside the house.
Police located Williams at a family member's home in Storm Lake and arrested her. She is charged with 15 counts of animal neglect.
Storm Lake Police also notified city officials of the deplorable conditions inside the home.
