The City of Rock Island has a new police chief. Jeff VenHuizen was sworn in Monday morning, December 10, 2012.

VanHuizen was previously the deputy chief and has been with the department since 1993.

He brings a variety of experience to the office, including his work as a narcotics supervisor and work with a K-9 officer.

VanHuizen is also being credited with establishing what is called the crime suppression unit earlier this year. It takes a proactive approach to combating criminal activity through efforts that focus on problem solving, not just response.

After a nationwide search, the city determined VanHuizen to be the best choice for Rock Island.
