They met at a cafe in Tipton a few years ago. The two women discovered that they shared a common interest in music. Moira DePasquale and Mary Barnum call themselves the Stop Light Sisters.

Moira plays an Italian made violin which is more than 200 years old.  A family friend sold it to her a few years ago. Mary Barnum is a very talented flute player. The two musicians are not related. They are Stop Light Sisters in name only. Cedar County has only one stop light, and the name of the duet is a takeoff on that.

On Thursday, the two musicians entertained an audience at a coffee shop in town. They played some Celtic music and Christmas Carols.

Moira has played the violin for 48 years.  She attended college in California, and played in the Santa Barbara Symphony. Mary started playing the flute 40 years ago. She attended the University of Northern Iowa and also teaches music.

Mary says music is a gift from God, and she feels blessed to share it with others. The two women play at weddings, and community events in the Tipton area.
