Mental Health Problems in Davenport

Updated:

Budget Cuts... We've heard about them before but now they come to light in an industry that can't take anymore cuts.

Vera French Mental Health Center is still hurting from a nearly 1 billion dollar budget cut last year by the state of Iowa.

This has led to the cut of three separate programs in the last 12 months. Programs that assist with keeping the mentally ill out of jail or helping patients find a stable job.

And despite not having enough money, the staff at Vera French continued to see 600 patients - free of charge because they say it's part of their mission to serve the community.

"The programs are gone," said CEO Anne Armknecht, "So it's becoming increasingly difficult for us to do our jobs and increasingly frustrating to see the needs go unmet... And we aren't even able to look for additional staff because we aren't able to pay them.

Armknecht stressed that if something isn't done at upcoming legislative meetings in Des Moines, the worse could be yet to come for vera french and for the future of mental health care in Iowa.
