The storm grounded hundreds of flights across the Midwest, including dozens flying in and out of Quad City International. Families trying get home to see loved ones, pick them up or even fly somewhere warm to celebrate Christmas, could not.

The delays started showing up just after noon Thursday, at the height of the storm. Soon the status of those flights changed from delayed to canceled. We are told many planes just couldn't get here. Those flying from western states like Utah and Colorado, couldn't fly through the weather. And even though airport crews have been working around the clock to clear runways, planes just couldn't land in such limited visibility.

Hundreds of passengers spent the afternoon and early evening checking the board, waiting in line and watching movies on computers or reading the paper. Those we talked to say they know travelers are always at Mother Nature's mercy, but that doesn't make waiting any easier.

Chad Harvey says, "We were gonna take the kids to Walt Disney World. That's what Santa got whole family for a present, to take the kids to Disney World. And we're here at the airport to go and find out our flight's been canceled due to the weather."

"I got in about 9:30," Jessica Reedy tells us. "My flight was originally supposed to take off at 11, and of course, it was delayed. It was originally delayed 'til 1:30 and now I don't know when I'll be able to head home."

Tracey Welsh says, "They hope to get a plane here. It's currently in Sioux Falls, SD. They attempted to land, but could not, so they were redirected there and they hope to get us out tonight."

No one is flying out Thursday night, or has been. And no one is heading out early in the morning either. Every flight before eight Friday morning has already been canceled. The planes need time to get here before they can head out again.

We are told virtually all of these flights are full, so airlines are really shuffling.  Allegiant customers tell us they are flying Friday. But we know American has no available flights until Sunday, the 23rd.
