Rock Island Fire Displaces Family Of Five

Updated:

The Rock Island Fire Department responded to a house fire at 4502 8th Ave, just before 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday night, January 7, 2012.

Firefighters say they found heavy smoke coming from the 2 and a half story home when they arrived.

According the the report, the fire in the basement was put out upon arrival, but it had traveled up the walls. They say this made it more difficult to completely extinguish.

The Moline Fire Department assisted Rock Island as well as a District Chief from Mutual Aid.

Officials say damage estimates are approximately $60,000 for the home and $40,000 for contents.

The family of 2 adults and 3 children are currently being aided by the American Red Cross as the home is uninhabitable.

The Rock Island Fire Department reports no injuries to the occupants or to firefighters and says the fire took 30-45 minutes to completely extinguish.

In addition to the residents, A dog and hamster were rescued by firefighters from the home.

MidAmerican Energy was also called to the scene to secure the utilities.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Rock Island Fire Marshal's Office.
