LAS VEGAS, Nevada - Miss Iowa, Mariah Cary of Burlington, apologized to supporters early Sunday for misspeaking during Saturday night's Miss America Pageant in which she finished fourth runner-up.
During the pageant when Cary was asked her position on legalizing marijuana, she began by saying she agreed with marijuana only for last-resort medicinal purposes. However, she ended her response by saying, "I do not think it should be used for anything but recreational use in health care."
Early Sunday morning Cary tweeted "I apologize for the slip up with words in my on [stage] question..hope u all know what I meant so blessed!! Top 5 at miss America!"
Cary's Facebook page contains several well wishes posted after the pageant. Michelle Balzer Hairston posted "Im so proud of you and thank you for representing Iowa in such an outstanding manner."
Cary, 20, is an advocate for those with Tourette Syndrome. She currently attends Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids.
Mallory Hagan, Miss New York, won the title of Miss America 2013.
