Opportunity knocks at the Walnut Grove Pioneer Village in Scott County. County Conservation  is starting a Village Apprentice Program. It's an opportunity for the public to learn a craft and also demonstrate at village events. It is free.

Bob Tuftee is a journeyman blacksmith. He hammers and shapes. Demonstrating his craft. The blacksmith shop was the place where people came to get items made or repaired.

There's an opportunity to learn from Master Weaver Cindy Pippert. She uses a one hundred year old loom to make a rug. Cindy has been a volunteer at the village for nine years.

Other volunteers knit. Some demonstrate black iron cooking over an open fire. These are also opportunities for aspiring apprentices.

Village Master Demonstrators will be available for training sessions on Saturdays in February, March and April. The only stipulation is that when classes are complete, apprentices agree to be volunteer demonstrators for a minimum of four days at village events or tours.

For more information, you can contact Scott County Conservation. That number is 563-328-3283.
