The FBI announced Tuesday morning, January 22, 2013, it has captured the man believed to be responsible for 17 bank robberies across seven states, including three banks inside Quad City area Hy-Vee stores.

Dubbed the "Ray Bandit" because he wore Ray Ban-type sunglasses during the robberies, the suspect was identified as Jeremy Evans, of Carol Stream, Ill.

The FBI says on Tuesday, January 15, 2013, Elgin Police arrested Evans minutes after the report of a robbery at Old Second National Bank in Elgin, Ill. Employees called 911 about 9:15 a.m., reporting an armed man came into the bank demanding money. Soon after, officials say officers spotted a car matching the description of the getaway vehicle and arrested its driver. The suspect was later identified as Evans. No one was hurt in the incident.

Agents believe the same man robbed the Wells Fargo bank branch located inside the Moline Hy-Vee store on the Avenue of the Cities last August. In addition, Evans is a suspect in a robbery at the Valley Bank branch inside the Hy-Vee on Devils Glen Rd. in Bettendorf on Sept. 14 and the American Bank & Trust branch inside the Milan Hy-Vee store on Sept. 26, 2012. There were similar robberies at banks in Wisconsin, Indiana, Nebraska, California and Virginia.

The FBI says Evans is also being investigated for his involvement in numerous unsolved bank robberies in other states and more charges may be filed.

Total combined loss from the 17 attributed robberies is over $75,000.

Evans is currently being held without bond at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago Ill. The decision on filing charges against Evans rests with the United States Attorneys Office.
