Puppet Theatre

All puppets are not like the Muppets! That's according to Monica Leo. She should know. Monica started the Eulenspiegel ( Oil-N-Speegel) ) Puppet Theatre in 1974 as a touring puppet troupe. She also established the Owl Glass Puppetry Center in West Liberty in 1995.

Monica and the members of the troupe are entertainers. They delight audiences with folk tales and fiction, all while maneuvering puppets. Leo makes the puppets, creates the sets, and most of the time writes the scripts.

Angela Polowy is a puppeteer, and says it gives her an opportunity to leave reality behind and bring a character to life.

Justin Cornett-Olsson is thirty one years old, and has been a puppeteer for ten years. He says good hand-eye coordination certainly helps. It's all about unlocking the ability to have that puppet come alive and move.

The group has performed in twenty eight states and also internationally. They manipulate paper mache, hand and rod, shadow, and giant parade puppets. It takes quite a bit of practice.

They have performed all over the state of Iowa, taking puppet theatre to a number of schools and communities, providing high quality performances and workshops. Eulenspiegel received the 2000 Iowa Arts Award for its long term commitment to excellence in the arts.
