With cold Midwest winter temperatures, it's tempting for many Quad City drivers to leave their car running to warm it up before they have to sit in it. But be careful. Davenport police say that's led to ten car thefts in the last week alone.

Davenport Police Chief Frank Donchez says half of the thefts have occurred in people's driveways while the other half has happened at convenience stores.

He says it's simply a crime of opportunity.

"I know it's cold and you want to keep it warm, but it's just not worth it. If you're going to warm it up in the driveway stay in it. If you're running in for a cup of coffee or pack of cigarettes, shut it off and take the keys."

Police say there is no specific area where the cars left running have been stolen, but ten in one week is a red flag to remind drivers not to leave a car running and unattended.
