Thousands of people dove for cover as part of a national drill Thursday morning, February 7, 2013, as students at a Rock Island elementary school practiced what you need to do in the event of an earthquake.

It's not something that happens in the Quad City area very often, but officials say with an active fault line in Illinois, everyone needs to know to drop, cover and hold on.

Judi Jarvis from the Rock Island Center for Math and Science says school organizers worked with students to emphasize the importance of being prepared and following directions.

"They need to know what drill they've been taught to participate in. They need to know to go to the area quietly and wait for directions. We instill that in all of our students."

Organizers say it's important for students to be prepared, even if a scenario like an earthquake seems unlikely.
