Merging Two Drug Cultures; A New Trend In The Quad Cities

Updated:

An alarming new drug trend is showing up in the Quad Cities area. Involvement in both methamphetamine and heroine are beginning to merge. Local drug enforcement officers say it's in both the manufacturing and use of the drugs.

The overlap of the two drug cultures started emerging last year, possibly due to the influx in heroin making its way to the Quad Cities. Officers are seeing people trading, selling, and often heroin is showing up during the meth making process.

"Meth producers are turning to heroin for the opiate value because their meth withdrawals or it calms them done when they begin to cook," said Kevin Winslow, Director of the Quad City Metropolitan Enforcement Group.

Winslow says sometimes it makes it easier to identify suspects, but still concerning since drug involvement often lead to other crimes.
